Well, here are the reviews.

The Bluetooth dongle I purchased is a Rocketfish Bluetooth Dongle (link) from Bestbuy. It is about $50.00 CAN, though I got it for free because they told me the laptop I purchased had Bluetooth built in. I’ve used the dongle so far to connect to a) my cellphone and b) 3 wii controllers. I’ve found that there are some problems (it disables your speakers and you have to manually disable its new speaker driver), as well as some times where it disconnected, but overall its worked great. I’ve been able to play Cortex Command with a Wii controller and transferred my pictures off my cellphone. I’d still recommend you get bluetooth built in, but this dongle is still pretty good.

The gamepad I got was a Logitech Dual Action Gamepad (link) from Bestbuy. I’ve only had it for a few days yet I’ve already decided to return it. It feels cheap, with a grip that’s worthless and a low-quality plastic build. The d-pad and various buttons all have reasonably good tactile-feedback. There’s no rumble. The analogue sticks are what really bring the product down, though. Firstly, the hole is square-shaped, making it next to impossible to push directly left-right-up-or-down. Secondly, they have a very low-quality rubber top. Overall, this gamepad is cheap-feeling and not very well designed. I wouldn’t pay more than $5.00 for it and will be returning it shortly.

Final product is the Nyko Wii Charge Base (link) bought from, you guessed it, Bestbuy. They’re $40.00 CAN and, if you play the Wii fairly often, well worth the price. You get 1 charge base and 2 rechargeable battery packs. It is a pretty good package, as it saves a lot of money on batteries. Its high quality, convenient, and not that expensive. I would definitely recommend it.

Well, that’s it. I’ll be posting that review of Cortex Command soon, as well as finally finishing the site updates within two weeks. Until next post,

Dravailo <![CDATA[Bluetooth Dongles - Not Again!]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/06/bluetooth-dongles-not-again/ 2007-06-15T17:32:09Z 2007-06-15T17:32:09Z Well, I just tried connecting a Wii controller to use in Cortex Command and lo and behold, no bluetooth adapter is in my computer! Turns out the Best Buy employee who sold it to me wasn’t quite accurate about the details. They’ve offered 50% off on a bluetooth adapter in their store, but I’m a little worried about the quality of their bluetooth adapters. I already bought a Kensington adapter that promptly caused bluescreens and crashes on my old Inspiron computer. I hope the Rocketfish one they’re selling won’t have similar problems.

Anyway, I am also looking at the purchase of a dual-analog gamepad. Not sure what model I’ll go with, any suggestions? In the main time I’ll use my Logitech WingMan joystick and Wii controllers.

Also, I’ll be putting up a review of Cortex Command within a few days. This gamepad is actually to see how it plays in multiplayer (no internet mode, unfortunately). It’s currently still a beta game/engine, at Build 14. Here’s the link, but be warned that it has a lot of blood, despite being a side-view pixel-graphics game.

Dravailo <![CDATA[Game Testing Continues…]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/06/game-testing-continues/ 2007-06-13T02:44:52Z 2007-06-13T02:44:52Z Hey, I’ve been testing several games now. Such as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, America’s Army 8.2, Supreme Commander, Battlefield 2142, Day of Defeat, Cellfactor Revolution, Black Shades, Ichor, KartRider, Toblo, and Tremulous. Overall, a mix of commercial and freeware games.

First up, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. This game is, in my opinion, what the series is about: stealth. You sneak into secure buildings and/or facilities to find out information, destroy files, kill a particular person, etc. Actually, the story doesn’t really seem to matter that much. However, the best feature of Chaos Theory is, in my opinion, the Co-Op. Co-op is a mode where you and another player can, over LAN or internet, play together to reach a goal. Though it can be confusing at first, after getting used to the co-op moves you can perform it becomes a really cool and refreshing way to play the game. Though there’s only about 6 missions available, more can be downloaded. Overall, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is a good game.

Ah, America’s Army (or AA) is an interesting free game that the US army is actually using to try and recruit people. Despite this, and the excessive file size for that matter (2.5 GB in v8.2), the game isn’t as fun as some of the other first-person-shooters available. The graphics are decent, nothing like the Source game engine, but not that bad either. The weapons are realistic, you can go prone, toggle between sprinting and whatnot. Overall, the gameplay is very realistic. Online mode is also fairly fun. The thing that really makes the game a pain is that you cannot play online until you finish Basic Training. You see, they’ve actually made it extremely realistic compared to real army tests. For example, you have to shoot pop-up targets from within a firing zone, you have to listen to their talks about how to operate machinery. For medic training, you even have to take a multiple-choice test on clearing airways and whatnot. However, in game, this training is irrelevant. As a medic, you just have to run up to a person and hold F until they’re healed. Often, using the strategies that they present in training does not work online as it will get you killed. On top of that, online play isn’t anything spectacular. Go play Battlefield if you want to have more FPS fun.

As for Battlefield 2142, the game is great! I’ve found that it has a tendency to crash every few hours on Vista, but other than that there are very few complaints I have about it. The graphics look great, with pretty cool specular lighting, though widescreen resolutions are unavailable (EA got lazy and ended up saying that widescreen monitors give players an unfair advantage. That is completely bogus, as many other things such as frames per second, better CPU speed, etc. give players advantages. EA was just lazy, pure and simple). The gameplay is great, with pods being a cool addition. You can literally blast into the air out of some ground vehicles, using a pod, and land on the enemy titan! Also, the upgrades are pretty cool. My only complaints would be Vista crashing, lack of widescreen support, and how for some reason most servers are slightly laggy, regardless of number of players/internet speed. I’d recommend Battlefield 2142, or at least Battlefield 2.

Now, I’m going to cut the reviews more. I realise this is becoming a long post. For Supreme Commander (or SupCom), I would only recommend it if you like RTS games, as this is not for people new to the genre. Gas Powered Games did their best to make the game accessible, but you need to be a real gamer to avoid being owned online. Basically, SupCom is far better to its predecessor, Total Annihilation (TA), which was better than StarCraft but the nobody heard of it and Cavedog studios shut down. SupCom has great features, such as units all arriving at the same time (fast units will slow down when grouped with slower units unless you tell otherwise), ability to scroll in and out from a tactical map, queuing orders, etc. It’s a great RTS for RTS fans, I’d recommend it over StarCraft even.

I’ve had Day of Defeat for a while. It came with Counter Strike. I never played it cause I thought I wouldn’t like an old-style war game, but I was wrong. DoD is a great game, as good as Counter Strike in my opinion (yes I’m prepared to be flamed). It’s got great graphics because it uses the Source engine, has semi-accurate weapons, has VERY annoying snipers, and is, most importantly, fun! I’d recommend it, as you can get it bundled with CS:S.

Cellfactor Revolution is a free game. Mostly because it’s being used to try to make people buy PhysX cards. You see, the single-player campaign and 3-out-of-5 multiplayer levels are unavailable if you don’t have a PhysX card, due to “High Physics Requirements”. Now, some people are currently working on an emulator to trick it into thinking you have the card, but in the main time I was only able to test those 2 levels, as I have a laptop and can’t install a PhysX card. Cellfactor, even on those 2 levels, uses a LOT of physics. You see, 2 of 3 of the characters have psychic powers. Bishop is completely psychic and can fly, pick-up-and-throw objects, gather hundreds of objects into a ball and throw them, pick up people/bombs/other objects and crush them, throw masses of objects out of the way, etc. Black Ops has basic psychic powers (can pick-up-and-throw-objects-one-at-a-time) but also has a gun. And Guardian has two guns but no psychic abilities. Overall, I’m still not sure if Cellfactor is worth the hard drive space, but it looks really cool and the campaign will probably rock when that PhysX emulator’s done.

Black Shades, just as an advance warning, is not meant to look good. The characters are, literally, made up of boxes and spheres. Unlike other first-person-shooters, Black Shades has you protecting one person (in a white shirt) from hordes of assassins and, in some levels, zombies. Despite the graphics, Black Shades has some pretty cool gameplay. You can tackle people as a non-lethal way to take them out, shoot them, snipe them (crouch to use the scope), and use some pretty cool strategies. For example, I had 3 people targeting the white-shirt-person. There was no way I could shoot them all, so I tackled the white-shirt-person right before they shot. They all missed. Overall, Black Shades is a really fun game and is a small download. I’d recommend you to give it a shot!

Ichor is a simplistic-liquid-based game. I must warn you, even with a fast computer it will run slow. Anyway, you move around to slosh liquid of your colour, avoid the enemy and his-coloured liquid. Very simple concept, quite some fun. However, the graphics are low quality, the menus seizure-inducing, and overall it does not have a great presentation. Try it for something new, but I doubt you’ll play it longer than an hour. If that.

KartRider (currently BETA) is a game made by the people behind Maple Story. No, it’s not an MMORPG. No, it doesn’t suck like Maple Story. Anyway, KartRider is a Mario-Kart style game where you race up to 7 other people online. You earn coins from placing high in the race and use that money to buy stuff like new karts and bumper-stickers. In the races, there are all kinds of cool items, like missiles, magnets, shields, a flying-orb-thing which attacks people and envelopes them in water, and a lot of other cool effects. Overall, KartRider is fun to play but I’m not sure if it’s worth 200 mb.

Toblo has a kid-style-presentation. However, the gameplay is well thought out and unique. It’s a student project from DigiPen, so it’s naturally a little unpolished, but the game concept and most of the gameplay is pretty good. It’s got full physics too. The goal is basic capture-the-flag. However, instead of guns or bullets, you throw blocks at each other. Everything in the game is constructed of blocks, which you can grab and store-somehow-in-your-pocket, just to throw at enemies and knock them out for a few seconds. It’s pretty fun, though the computer chatter is stupid. However, it’s a great in-between-game for LAN parties.

Ah, the final game on the list. Tremulous. Tremulous is an alien-vs-humans type game. The humans have guns, the aliens have natural (and cool abilities). Basically, the aliens evolve every so often (or after making enough kills), allowing them to become better alien forms. This gives abilities like melee, poisonous gases, clinging-to-walls, etc. Overall, it’s a unique gameplay style. The graphics, unfortunately, aren’t that great though. I would suggest Tremulous for download, however I would not buy it if it was commercial.
Well, that’s the end of that. A lot of games just reviewed. A very long post. Hope you learned something about them, they’ll be added to the main database within a few weeks now that I’m done exams and some other work. Also, now that fraps is finally working, I’ll be able to upload videos more frequently. And make sure you check out my deviant art favourites, I’m constantly updating it!

Dravailo <![CDATA[Man of the Year]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/05/man-of-the-year/ 2007-05-31T19:58:55Z 2007-05-31T19:58:55Z Just watched a movie on Rogers Pay Per View (channel 100 on Rogers Cable, reasonably good service). It’s Man of the Year which features Robin Williams as the protagonist, Tom Dobbs. Dobbs runs a news show where he pokes fun at political institutions, the government, and strange decisions by those in high power. The story starts with an audience member saying, prior to that day’s filming, that he should run in the election. The idea is quickly pushed away until a few weeks later when he announces, on live television, that he will be running in the campaign.

As this is going on the company running the voting software, Delacroy, have employee Eleanor Green (Laura Linney) confront them about a glitch in the voting software that will make the votes practically irrelevant to who gets elected. They dismiss it as it is only weeks to the election and their stock would plummet if this news was leaked.

The story picks up from there, as the most amazing thing happens: Tom Dobbs wins. Yes, a comedian wins the campaign to become president for the United States of America.

Overall, the movie is a great watch. There are some scenes, mostly around Eleanor Green, that give this movie its PG14 rating. However, it is a funny comedy that will appeal to most people. I recommend watching it and give it an 8.5/10.

Dravailo <![CDATA[Games to Try!]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/05/games-to-try/ 2007-05-16T18:15:57Z 2007-05-16T18:15:57Z Since the site is still not working satisfactorily, I will post links to some games you have to try. But first, an update for what’s going on behind the scenes of FWC:

The first major change will be how games are added and managed. Until now, this was the game page. A little annoying to use, couldn’t find games by name, inconsistent layout, etc.

Here’s a look at the newer layout. In this case I have used a commercial game, Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii) as an example. Firstly, it has a blurb about the game. Also present is some information such as category, download link (if free game), publisher, etc. Links to the Review, Videos, and Screenshots are also there.

Also, there is a search engine being worked on. Here is the link to it. Currently, there are only a couple games (rayman raving rabbids and mu-cade) added to the new system, so you won’t find much with it. However, it’s getting there.

The parts that need to be finished before I start using the new system (and updating more frequently) are:

 • Images for game page and search page. It’s still a little chaotic developer-version looking
 • Finishing up the method of adding new videos, screenshots, etc. on the admin page to make it more convenient
 • Fixing some glitches, making the video player friendlier to non-Windows-systems

Overall, not that much. However, it may still take a month to get it done due to other concerns I currently have.

So, now that I’m done that, you’re probably asking for the games. Well, here they are:

 • Megapixel, interesting FPS (singleplayer only, Mac and Windows and Browser versions available)
 • Sumotori Dreams, very funny (in multiplayer) game where two ragdoll sumo people try to knock the other person over
 • Orbiter, not really a game, more of a simulator. Can simulate flying to other planets and landing with realistic (and not-so-realistic) craft. Has a lot of mods available, very cool simulator, though only try it if you’re a hardcore-flight-simulator-fan. Large download.
 • Grid Wars, a Geometry Wars-clone that unfortunately had the original link removed due to Intellectual Property Rights. Anyway, the link goes to WorldOfStuart which has a mirror. Very VERY fun arcade-like game
 • Within a Deep Forest, an adventure game where you play a bouncing ball trying to stop a bomb exploding that will freeze the world. Very fun, unique game, though I would have suggested a different narrator

That’s some of the games I’d suggest at the moment. I’ve got a list with 40+ of them, many untested, about 20 listed to add to the site. These are just a few that I think are really good, though don’t try Orbiter unless you’re really into flight simulators.

Anyway, just before I end this post, here’s a few projects I’m keeping an eye on because they look interesting:

 • MarioKart Source, mod that uses the source game engine (you need Half Life 2 installed) to create a physics-accurate Mario Kart game. Looks like it will be fun when it’s done.
 • Subversion, a game from the creators of Darwinia that is currently in the works. The link goes to the blog, where you can find articles called “It’s all in your head, Part #” which talk about Subversion. Looks like it’ll be interesting when released.

I know that must look like the longest blog post yet. Well, it is pretty much. Anyway, as I get through my testing que I’ll write about any other games I suggest and updates about the site.

Until next post,

Dravailo <![CDATA[Spring! (The Game)]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/05/spring-the-game/ 2007-05-15T21:52:58Z 2007-05-15T21:52:58Z There was an RTS named Total Annihilation. It was released prior to the well-known Starcraft by a company named Cavedog. Though those who found it (including me) found it to be superior to Starcraft, it died out as Cavedog went bankrupt.

Now there is Supreme Commander, a game which is considered to be the ’spiritual sequel’ to TA, as it was made by some of the same people. I also have played Supreme Commander and find it retains the same amount of difficulty as TA, the same habit of non-satisfactory campaigns, and a LOT better multiplayer than the first.

However, before SupCom was released, there was a project. Known as TA Spring! (now simply Spring) it’s goal was to replicate the type of gameplay as TA, while offering it for free. Recently the project has moved away from being a copy of the gameplay of TA, and is now starting to develop and be a fun online game. It has mods (eg. StarWars mod), good 3D graphics, deforming terrain. It’s got many new features, all for free:

Spring Homepage

Overall, after testing it again, I can see it’s become better than ever. I’d definitely suggest it to any fan of TA, or SupCom. Though, newbie be warned, metal resource management is quite hard.

Coming up tomorrow, several games to try out while I get the main site up and running proper (search engine for games, game database, etc.),

Dravailo <![CDATA[Ask A Ninja! Also, simple intro to lucid dreaming.]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/05/ask-a-ninja-also-simple-intro-to-lucid-dreaming/ 2007-05-10T03:28:17Z 2007-05-10T03:28:17Z I’ve been browsing and just saw the Mythbusters web-cast of Ninja questions, in which they had the person from AskANinja.Com on. Here’s the youtube video:

Anyway, that reminded me to check out AskANinja.com again. Checked it out, funny new material. For those who don’t know, people send in questions to Ask A Ninja and a ninja (or so you think) answers them, in very funny ways, via video podcasts. There’s about 40 episodes, the more recent ones are funnier. Still, I’d recommend classics like “Ninja Skills” and “Ninja Dogs” (or Caninja’s, as the ninja calls them). Very funny site, well worth watching.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I’m starting to try and have lucid dreams. Again. I’m too busy right now, but during summer I’ll have a lot more time and (hopefully) several lucid dreams. Lucid Dreaming is, simply put, becoming conscious that you are dreaming while you are dreaming. May sound pointless, but this gives you a whole world, which can be more vivid than life it self, in which you have control. You can actually affect things by willing them to happen. This includes flying, walking through walls, talking to your subconscious, shapeshifting, whatever. Whatever you can think of that doesn’t go against your beliefs (since your subconscious creates the dream world, deep beliefs often prevent some things from occurring) is usually possible.

If you want to learn to have lucid dreams, a few things are great resources. One is a podcast from Erin Pavlina. Another is the DreamViews site and forums. The best book on the subject is Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen Laberge.

Dravailo <![CDATA[Opinion on Vista, Gmod 9, and Battlefield 2142]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/05/opinion-on-vista-gmod-9-and-battlefield-2142/ 2007-05-06T17:45:38Z 2007-05-06T17:45:38Z Well, I’ve been using Vista for a little while now. The first thing you’d notice while using it would definitely be Aero glass, the interface change. Basically, it makes window borders transparent and has other little effects that make everything look better. If your computer cannot run Aero, however, the ‘Aero Basic’ theme looks really bad, so I’d change it to XP theme.

Past the new interface, Vista is basically XP. It does have changes, like User Account Control (UAC), but it other than UAC it’s the same operating system (OS) with minor interface changes. There’s a search bar added to the start bar, better background-image-control, some more customization options, but it is mostly the same OS. There’s no major need to upgrade if you’re using XP just fine.

Onto other subjects, I just got Battlefield 2142 and gave that a whirl. Aside from no widescreen support, the game is a lot of fun. Conquest mode is basically the same from the previous titles in the series, but Titan mode is brand new. Basically, there are two giant air craft. They have a shield around them that only friendlies can pass through. There are also several silos, usually 3-7, on the ground. Standing near one for a little while will convert it to your team’s side, in which case it will periodically fire missiles at the opposing titan, weakening its shield/hull. Once the shields are down, you can directly fly people over and land on the enemy ship. They can infiltrate inside the ship and destroy the ship’s core a lot quicker than external attacks.

Overall, I am very impressed by 2142’s new Titan mode. The rest of the game is really similar to Battlefield 2, though helicopters don’t use rotating blades and are a lot easier to fly. Still, it doesn’t seem much like the year 2142. You’d think they’d have thought of new things instead of still using tanks and dune buggies. Either way, I give it an 8.6/10.

Finally, I’ve blogged previously about Garry’s Mod 10 (Gmod10). However, I was recently contacted about where to download Gmod9, the version prior to Gmod going commercial. So, I checked Garry Newman’s site, but he’d taken down the Gmod9 downloads. Then, via http://forums.facepunchstudios.com, the official forums, I got a filefront link. However, filefront requires registration to download files. Instead of registering, I used BugMeNot to get a public username and password. Basically, BugMeNot is a useful site where people submit username-password combinations for sites that require registration. Then, other people can use said site without registering. I’d recommend it for any sites where you aren’t going to do much after downloading one file/reading one article.

As for Gmod9, I gave it a whirl again. I tried searching for pirate gamemode, but it doesn’t seem there are as many servers for that anymore. Overall, Gmod9 is a major step back from Gmod10, and I’d still recommend the new version over it. After all, it’s only $10.00 if you already own a Source Game (CS:S, HL2, etc.), or $24.99 bundled with Counter-Strike:Source.

Dravailo <![CDATA[The Pursuit of Happyness]]> http://www.thefreewarecentral.com/blog/2007/04/the-pursuit-of-happyness/ 2007-05-01T01:18:48Z 2007-05-01T01:18:48Z The Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness. Yes, that is happiness with a y, and this movie is something to be seen.

So, just tonight, I watched this movie. I was expecting something that was pretty joyful, upbeat, and altogether a happy movie. Though this movie definitely shows the pursuit of happiness, it does not show what I expected. And that’s in a good way.

The Pursuit of Happyness is about Chris Gardner (Will Smith), with his family. This includes Linda (Thandie Newton) and his only son, Christopher (Jaden Smith, Will’s son). The movie is about the conflict they endure from day to day. Chris had invested in these expensive bone-density scanners, which he then finds difficult to sell to hospitals as it is seen as unnecessary and expensive, being only slightly better than current x-ray machines. The rent is becoming harder to pay, he has parking tickets piling up due to repeatedly parking near hospitals, and is experiencing family conflict. Eventually Christopher and him move out, to explore the world and pursue the ultimate happiness.

The movie is about 2 hours long and is very heavy to watch. You won’t be watching it over and over again with kids, like Finding Nemo. However, ultimately this movie is a lot more rewarding and carries much more meaning than almost any Pixar or Disney film. It has funny scenes, such as his interview with the broker company he is looking at employing at, as well as sad scenes, such as his conflicts with Linda.

The Pursuit of Happiness is about just that, the pursuit, and the ultimate rewards of perseverance. I would definitely recommend it to almost any audience, at least above 13 years old. It is a touching and inspiring movie that should not be missed.
